Verbal Bullying

Mockery, name-calling, and threats - the impact lasts far longer than the moment.

Introduction

Words can leave a mark for years. Verbal bullying includes name-calling, mockery about looks or accent, and threats. It is often dismissed as 'banter' - but the victims carry real emotional scars.

Signs

  • Your child becomes quiet or quick to anger after school.
  • They avoid mentioning certain names at home.
  • They start doubting their looks, abilities, or identity.
  • They suddenly refuse a particular class or activity.

What you can do

  1. Listen without judgement - let them tell it at their own pace.
  2. Note: dates, exact words used, who else was around.
  3. Practise short comebacks: "That's not true," then walk away.
  4. Take notes to the teacher or school counsellor.
  5. If it repeats, file a report on HeroFriends.

When to get help

If mockery touches religion, race, or identity - or you see signs of depression / anxiety - get counsellor support. Call 15999 for the children's support line.
