Signs Your Child May Be a Victim of Bullying

Changes in sleep, appetite, and school performance - how to ask without scaring them.

Introduction

Children who are being bullied often refuse to tell. They fear being scolded, being seen as 'weak,' or believe nothing can be done. Caring adult eyes are the best protection.

Signs

  • Refusing school, or feigning illness on school mornings.
  • Coming home with damaged bags, clothes, or items.
  • Trouble sleeping or recurring nightmares.
  • Loss of appetite, or sudden overeating.
  • Sharp drop in academic performance.
  • Withdrawing from family or close friends.
  • Quick to anger, or crying without clear reason.

What you can do

  1. Make screen-free time together - in the car, walking, cooking.
  2. Ask open questions: "How was your day?" not "Are you being bullied?"
  3. Listen without interrupting or judging.
  4. Reassure them - it isn't your fault, and we'll figure this out together.
  5. Contact the school and, if needed, file a report on HeroFriends.
